A celebration of sport, community, and charity is kicking off in grand fashion this summer as the Shah Jalal Islamic Centre gears up to host one of the most anticipated grassroots events of the year.

On Sunday, 17th August 2025, the Abbey Leisure Complex in Cambridge will come alive with excitement for the 7 a Side Open Age Football Tournament and Family Fun Day, proudly sponsored by Mina Steakhouse, Iqbro wholesale
and Iqbro Grocers & Butchers.

Organised by DDYA (Darwin Drive Youth Association) in partnership with Cambridge Tigers FC, the event promises something for everyone – whether you’re lacing up your boots for competitive action or simply bringing the family for a day of laughter, food, and entertainment.

“We’re blending faith, sport and fun — and using it to build something lasting for future generations,” said organiser Juned. “This is what community looks like.”

The tournament format will see 7 a side teams with up to three substitutes competing for a whopping £1,000 cash prize, fully sponsored to ensure all entry proceeds benefit the community. With a £200 entry fee per team, organisers are already reporting strong interest from local teams and beyond.

The open-age format welcomes players of all skill levels, and the competition is expected to be fierce, with local talent eager to showcase their skills in front of friends, families, and scouts.

“We wanted to create something that combines our love of football with giving back,” added Niaz, co-organiser. “Every penny raised will go towards the new development of Shah Jalal Islamic Centre, which has been a cornerstone of faith and learning for our community.”

Beyond the pitch, a buzzing Family Fun Day will offer activities for all ages, including:
• BBQ & International Food Stalls
• Bouncy Castles & Kids’ Play Zones
• Community and Cultural Stalls
• Opportunities to connect with local charities and businesses

Whether you’re coming to support a team, enjoy a sizzling kebab, or let the kids burn off energy in the inflatable zone, there’s something for everyone.

The entire event is set against the backdrop of raising funds for a deeply rooted cause. Shah Jalal Islamic Centre – a registered charity currently undergoing a major redevelopment to expand its facilities and better serve the growing needs of the community in and around Darwin Drive.
