Football is often described as the world’s game, and a new exhibition in Barking is highlighting how the sport connects communities, cultures and generations across the globe.

More Than A Shirt, launched at Barking Learning Centre in partnership with the London Jersey Gallery, showcases an impressive collection of football shirts from countries around the world. Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the exhibition explores the deeper meaning behind football kits, revealing stories of identity, heritage, history and belonging.

Far more than sporting attire, each shirt represents a unique journey and offers visitors an opportunity to discover how football has shaped communities and inspired millions of people across different nations and cultures.

Designed to be educational, accessible and engaging, the exhibition welcomes visitors aged 10 and above. Through its displays, it encourages conversations about diversity, inclusion and the universal language of sport.

The exhibition provides football enthusiasts, families, students and local residents with a chance to reflect on the power of the game to unite people and create lasting memories.

More Than A Shirt is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday from 10am to 4pm at the Barking Learning Centre.

The exhibition runs until Friday 31 July, offering visitors plenty of opportunity to experience this unique celebration of football’s rich global heritage.
