New Era at Frenford FC Begins with Historic FA Cup Victory

A new chapter has begun at Frenford Football Club, and it could hardly have started in more memorable fashion.

Joint managers Imrul Gazi and Steven Carvell have overseen an impressive opening to their reign after taking charge in June, following the conclusion of David Forbes’ extraordinary 19 year spell at the club.

For Gazi, the appointment carries particular meaning. Living just around the corner from Frenford, the former Sporting Bengal United manager was delighted to take charge of his local Step 5 side.

“Managing Frenford is an honour and a privilege. It’s my local club and I’ve always seen the potential here. When the opportunity came, it was a no brainer,” said Gazi.

The new management team inherited a major rebuilding project. Almost 200 players featured during a demanding 10 week pre season before the squad was shaped into a group of around 20 to 22 players, blending experienced non league campaigners with ambitious young talent.

Yet the vision extends well beyond the first team results.

With approximately 35 youth teams already operating at the club, Gazi and Carvell want Frenford’s senior side to become the destination young footballers in Redbridge dream of reaching.

“We want young footballers from Redbridge to aspire to play for Frenford,” Gazi explained. “There is so much young talent locally and we want to provide a pathway and give players opportunities at this level.”

Creating a strong club culture is equally important.

“Most importantly, Steven and I want to create a family environment where players enjoy being here and are proud to represent Frenford.”

The opening results suggest that philosophy is already beginning to take shape.

Frenford started their Essex Senior League campaign with a convincing 2-0 away victory against Great Wakering Rovers, with Yousef and Chris finding the net.

Then came a landmark FA Cup afternoon.

Having never previously won an FA Cup tie, Frenford produced a disciplined and determined performance to overcome experienced Harlow Town 1-0. Yaseer Maalin’s decisive goal secured a historic victory and gave the club a moment to remember.

“It was a fantastic moment for everyone connected with Frenford,” said Gazi. “The players have worked incredibly hard throughout pre-season and their effort and attitude have been rewarded.”

For a club embarking on a new era, the atmosphere around Frenford is becoming increasingly positive, with new supporters arriving and players buying into the project.

Gazi, however, is keeping expectations firmly grounded.

“We’re not getting carried away. It’s two games and we know how tough this league is. But there’s a really good buzz around the club. We’re seeing new faces coming to games and we have players who genuinely want to be here.”

Next comes another opportunity to build momentum, with Frenford turning their attention to the FA Vase and an away trip to Wivenhoe Town.

The season will inevitably bring challenges, setbacks and testing moments. But for Gazi and Carvell, those are all part of building something sustainable.

“There’s no doubt there will be plenty of ups and downs throughout the season, that’s football. We are a new team and there is still a long way to go.

“But when the ups come, let’s enjoy them, that’s for sure.

“This is a project for Steven and me. We’re excited about what we can build here and hopefully give the Frenford and Redbridge community a team they can be proud of.”

For now, Frenford can celebrate a perfect start to a new era: two matches, two victories and, most importantly, a piece of club history already secured.

The journey has only just begun.
