Community Mourns Loss of Syed Afsar Uddin MBE

The Bangladeshi community is in mourning after celebrated school teacher and presenter Syed Afsar Uddin MBE sadly passed away this morning.

The funeral prayer for the iconic writer, broadcaster and community activist will be held 1.30 pm, Saturday, April 13 after Zuhr prayer at the East London Mosque.

Mr Uddin had shown immense bravery in battling cancer for the last few years. A hugely inspirational figure in the community, the former BBC World Service presenter served as a school teacher for almost 30 years as well as a hugely celebrated newsreader for Channel S, Radio Bangla, and Bangla TV amongst other media groups.

As a contributor to iconic Bangla language newspapers Surma, Janomot, Notun Din and Potrika he was a big voice in the campaign to retain Bengali language education in the curriculum of mainstream schools and colleges in Britain.

As a writer, philanthropist and community organiser the London Correspondent for Washington DC based Voice of America Radio was at the forefront of cutting edge reporting. His analysis of news and current affairs was second to none and led to him receiving many accolades throughout his career.

Syed Afsar received an MBE, (Member of the Order of the British Empire) as part of the late Queen’s 2020 Birthday Honours List for services to Education and the Community in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

In 2022 the veteran community activist was made a Freeman of the City of London during a ceremony at The Guildhall.

He leaves behind his wife, two sons and a daughter.
