Football will take on a deeper meaning in East London this September as the Newark Community Memorial Cup 2026 brings players, families and communities together for an afternoon of competition, remembrance and charitable giving.
The tournament takes place at Stepney Green Astro on Sunday 27 September, from 12pm to 6pm, with teams invited to compete across three age categories.
The competition will feature 35+ and 40+ seven a side tournaments, alongside a 50+ eight-a-side competition, providing experienced players with an opportunity to return to the pitch while celebrating community connections.
The Memorial Cup is being held to honour the memories and legacies of Dawlath Khan Babul, Shahiyaz Alam and others whose contributions continue to inspire those around them.
The event carries the theme “Honouring Legacy • Uniting Community • Playing for Sadaqah”, with participants encouraged to use sport as a means of remembering loved ones and supporting others.
With a team entry fee of £250, organisers are calling on squads to represent their community, borough or legacy and become part of a day combining sporting competition with heartfelt remembrance.
For those unable to participate on the pitch, there is also an opportunity to donate on behalf of those being remembered, helping support the wider cause and continue their legacy through community action.
The Newark Community Memorial Cup promises to demonstrate the enduring power of football to bring generations together, create friendships and turn remembrance into positive action.
