A tragic incident at West Mersea Beach in Essex has claimed the lives of three members of the same family, including seven-year-old Musa Ahmed.

On 22 July, several members of the family got into difficulty in the water near Seaview Avenue, West Mersea. Musa Ahmed, aged seven, was taken to hospital in a critical condition after being rescued from the sea.

Shelina Rahman, aged 41, and her 15 year-old daughter, Sameeha Rahman, tragically died following the incident. Police initially stated that the mother and daughter were believed to have been trying to help Musa after he got into difficulty in the water.

Essex Police confirmed that all those involved were related and that officers were continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Several other family members were also taken to hospital for treatment and were later reported to be recovering.

Shelina’s brother-in-law, Matiur Rahman, described the family’s shock following the incident. He said they had been enjoying a family trip to the seaside when, suddenly, “a big wave came and took them”.

“My whole family, we are, like, speechless,” he added. “We are very shocked. We can’t explain what has happened.”

What had been intended as a family day at the beach ended in a devastating tragedy.

Musa was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital, where he remained on life support. On 29 July, police announced that the seven-year-old had died.

Musa’s father, Shahin Ahmed, said the family had been caught by a “very strong” tide.

In a statement, Musa’s family said:

“We would also like to thank the Royal London Hospital intensive care unit team of doctors and nurses who demonstrated outstanding care and dignity whilst we have been at the hospital.

“We would also like to thank the whole community for their support and prayers.

“We would appreciate privacy during this very difficult time.”

Essex Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
