London Carrom Academy Presents Women’s Carrom Competition

By Emdad Rahman

The London Carrom Academy is proud to present a Women’s Carrom Competition this summer, shining a spotlight on female talent in one of South Asia’s most loved indoor sports. The event will take place at Harkness House Community Centre, Christian Street, London E1 1RX, on Sunday, 6th July 2025, from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

With an entry fee of £20, participants will also be treated to lunch and dinner, making it a full day community experience centered around friendly competition, cultural celebration, and female empowerment.

Carrom is a traditional tabletop game that originated in South Asia, often described as a blend of billiards, marbles, and air hockey. Played on a square board with four corner pockets, players use a striker disk to flick wooden counters into the goals. Carrom is popular across Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and beyond — and is now steadily growing its footprint across the UK, especially in community and youth centres.

The Women’s Carrom Competition represents a significant step in engaging women in sport and cultural recreation in a supportive, inclusive environment.

Organised by the London Carrom Academy, the event aims to:
• Build confidence and visibility for women in traditionally male-dominated cultural games
• Create safe and social spaces for women to meet, compete, and share experiences
• Preserve cultural heritage through intergenerational participation
• Foster leadership and organisation skills by involving women in planning and officiating roles

The day promises a mix of intense gameplay, networking, and storytelling, as women from all walks of life come together to celebrate skill and sisterhood.

Hafsa Islam, Editor of London Features, who are supporting the event, praised the initiative: “This competition is a beautiful blend of culture, empowerment, and community spirit. Carrom is something many of us grew up watching or playing, yet women have rarely been centre stage. This event changes that. It’s about giving women agency, joy, and recognition in their own right, on and off the board.”

The London Carrom Academy encourages all women whether beginners or seasoned players to come forward, take part, and make history at this celebration of culture, competition, and community.
