Cleaner BD Marks 10 Days of Action Across Barking and Dagenham

The Cleaner BD campaign continues to make a visible impact across the borough after successfully delivering ten large scale community clean up operations aimed at tackling waste, fly-tipping and environmental neglect.

The initiative began in November with a joint council and community clean up day in Becontree Heath and has since expanded into several hotspot locations throughout the borough. The latest Day of Action took place on Hertford Road, bringing together council teams, volunteers, businesses and local residents in a united effort to improve neighbourhoods and public spaces.

More than 70 school children joined the campaign activities alongside community volunteers and enforcement teams, highlighting growing local support for cleaner and greener streets.

The campaign has already achieved significant results, including the clearance of more than 20 tonnes of waste, the removal of major fly-tipping sites and the sweeping of hundreds of roads across the borough. Grass verges, bushes and trees were also cut back to improve visibility and the appearance of public areas.

Enforcement and education formed a major part of the initiative. Businesses found disposing of waste incorrectly were issued notices, while 11 businesses signed up to the Responsible Retailer Scheme relating to vape sales. Community Safety Enforcement Officers also engaged directly with residents, offering advice on correct waste disposal and issuing warning notices regarding neglected gardens and environmental eyesores.

Organisers praised the collective effort behind the campaign, stating that the achievements would not have been possible without the commitment and teamwork shown by council staff, schools, businesses and volunteers.

A spokesperson said the campaign is far from over, with another Day of Action planned for May and further monthly activities scheduled throughout the year.

Residents interested in taking part in future events are encouraged to sign up to the Cleaner, Greener newsletter for updates and opportunities to get involved in helping create a cleaner and safer borough for everyone.
